December 2021: News, Updates, and Opportunities for CASA Volunteers

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear CASA Volunteers,

It's hard to believe the holiday season is in full swing, and now we're just a few days out from Christmas. I hope each of you has enjoyed the spirit of the season so far and are looking forward to quality time with your loved ones.

December is moving right along here at the CASA office. In addition to our staff's annual Secret Santa fun, we're working hard to close the year out strong. This week, we swore in our final class of new advocates for 2021. In addition, holiday and year-end giving is in full swing and we are so appreciative of the people who will ensure a strong 2022 for CASA through their financial contributions.

If you're an advocate and have not yet made plans to check out Santa's Shop, please do so! The shop opened today and it's a great opportunity to ensure some holiday cheer for the kiddos on your cases. You can read more about the Santa's Shop schedule below.

Please reach out to me any time at angelar@casappr.org with questions, concerns, or comments.

Warmly,

Angela

Santa's Shop is open now!

Santa’s Shop will be open Dec. 15-21 for CASAs to get items for the kid’s on their cases. The hours vary by day, so please see the schedule before dropping by. Click here to see the hours!

Spotlight on Army Veteran and SEPT Volunteer Joseph Harrison

Joseph Harrison knows what it means to serve. After 20 years in the U.S. Army, he retired from active duty in 2004 but continued to serve through his work with Fort Carson’s Department of Behavioral Health, and as a volunteer in CASA's Supervised Exchange & Parenting Time program.

Inclusion Corner: Being intentional in learning about EID

Sometimes it may feel like understanding equity, inclusion, and diversity (EID) is just downright confusing! It may easier to just avoid the subject unless absolutely necessary. CASA's new EID consultant, MelindaJoy Mingo, understands. That's why she has provided this article about the value of being intentional in learning about EID.

December volunteer anniversaries

Several advocates celebrate anniversaries this month, including six who have been with CASA for five years! Shannon French (pictured) celebrates her fifth anniversary with CASA in December!

Diversity University in 2022!

CASA volunteers are invited to join Senior Judge Regina Walter, Dr. Regina Lewis, and others for Diversity University. Two sessions are available  (Jan. 27-28 OR Feb. 17-18) and training will be daily over zoom from 8:30 – 4:30 with a 30 minute lunch break. The purpose is to improve the ability of professionals to respond to the needs of a culturally diverse population and improve outcomes for youth. Over the course of two days, participants will address implicit and explicit bias, privilege, microaggressions, poverty, power, racism, abelism, homophobia, and other topics.

Free admission to Skate City

CASA has certificates for free Skate City admissions and rentals for kids 18 and under during regular 2 hour public sessions at any of the six Colorado locations (2 in Colo. Springs & 4 in Denver). Check their website for skate schedules and pick up your passes during business hours at the CASA office.

Free books for all in CASA library

We had some books recently donated to our CASA library, and we are running out of space! We also have backpacks. Stop by (between 8 and 5, Monday-Friday) to grab a book or two for your CASA kiddos. There is something for all ages and interests. No need to make an appointment.
