August 2021: News, Updates, and Opportunities for CASA Volunteers

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear CASA Volunteers,

It seems like summer has just flown by as the kids are already headed back to school! I hope you all have enjoyed summertime and are looking forward to fall as much as I am.

With school back in session, I am reminded of how each of you plays such an important role in the educational success of our CASA children. Whether you have helped achieve an IEP, recommended a tutor, or simply encouraged your student with homework - please know your CASA child fares better in school with you by their side.

If your family or friends have been interested in your work at CASA, please let them know about our upcoming Volunteer Information Sessions on Sept. 1 and Sept. 14.

It has been great to see so many of your faces around the office and at the volunteer appreciation gathering earlier this month.

As always, please contact me at angelar@casappr.org with any questions or concerns.

With gratitude,

Angela

Register for Colo. CASA Conference!

Registration for the annual Colorado CASA Conference, slated for Oct. 5-7, 2021, is now open.
This is a great opportunity to network with other CASA volunteers and staff, learn from
inspiring keynote and breakout speakers, participate in best practice sharing, and more!

Important information about parking at the CASA building

Last month, we sent out an email about some changes to the parking situation at the CASA office. Because of the development and growth downtown near our office, we are experiencing issues we did not experience before. If you did not have a chance to read the parking email from Angela, please check it out now.

Vanguard Skins Specialists rolled out the red carpet for CASA

Long-time CASA volunteer Jane Hegstrom first visited the dermatology practice Vanguard Skin Specialists back in 2016. She was impressed with the service she received but what she didn’t know is that the budding relationship would blossom into a powerful partnership for CASA.

Lots of opportunities at The Hanger!

Don't forget to shop The Hanger for your teen's back-to-school styles! There are also several new upcoming classes and workshops available for teens including guitar lessons, self defense, and a vehicle maintenance class. Check out the Hanger's webpage for more details!

12 new CASAs ready to advocate as foster kids head back to class

On any given day, there are 600 children living in out-of-home placement in El Paso County. Living in an unpredictable environment can be traumatic for children, and their situation often requires them to change schools, which means “back-to-school” season can present extra challenges for them.

Welcome new CASA staffers!

You might see a couple of new faces if you come to visit the CASA office. Please meet our new SEPT Volunteer Coordinator, Zachary Jeffers (left), and our new Fund Development Grants Specialist, Onnastasia Cole (right). We are so pleased they both joined us this summer!

August volunteers anniversaries

Ten advocates are celebrating their anniversaries as CASA volunteers this month, including the husband and wife duo of Joe and Sheila Maio (pictured) who have been with CASA for eleven years now. Thank you to all!

Inclusion Corner: Register before Oct. 23 for next book club reading

The National CASA Network Book Club is a virtual setting for CASA staff and volunteers to engage in facilitated dialogue and reflect on ways to address racism, injustices, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Registration for the next reading (The Color of Law) closes on Oct. 23. Independent reading will be followed by an author discussion in December.
