April 2022: News, Updates, and Opportunities for CASA Volunteers

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear CASA Volunteers,

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month which means we have been busy raising awareness, fundraising, and recruiting new volunteers! We recently held our annual Light of Hope fundraiser in-person for the first time since 2019. It was a huge success and we featured the inspirational story of the Schuler family who benefited greatly from the advocacy of CASA volunteer Mary Moffett. If you missed the event and would like to see the feature video, please check out the CASA "Month of Hope" webpage which will be accessible throughout April. Please share the page with your friends and family as well as we are hoping to recruit 30 new volunteers and raise a total of $200,000 this month.

Thank you for all you do for local children! Please reach out any time at angelar@casappr.org with questions, concerns, or comments.

Warmly,

Angela

Volunteer Appreciation Week

We love our volunteers, and we want to celebrate you!  A few CASA staff members will be hanging out at the café at Kinship Landing for a few hours each day of National Volunteer Appreciation Week.  Stop by, and we would love to buy you a coffee and chat for a bit.  You can park for free in the CASA parking lot. Click here for days and times.

Mandatory Reporter Training

Thank you for being a CASA volunteer! April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. It's a perfect time to refresh your training on reporting child abuse. Every CASA volunteer is required to complete ongoing training hours each year, and this training from the Colorado Office of Children, Youth, and Families is a great way to add to those hours. You are on the front lines of protecting children, and it is important to understand how to report abuse or neglect if you suspect a child is in danger.

Registration open for Foster Children's Festival at North Pole!

We are grateful to The North Pole for sponsoring the 45th Annual Foster Children’s Festival! This event is open to children and teens with an open D&N case through El Paso or Teller County, including youth in foster care, kin/kin-like placements, group homes, and children adopted within the last year. The event will be June 4th and 5th with a limited number of people each day.

CASA Volunteer Anniversaries

We are so pleased to celebrate the anniversaries of eleven advocates this April, including Laura Speer who has been speaking up for local children as a CASA volunteer for 14 years now!

Inclusion Corner: You are a point of light - by MelindaJoy Mingo

I recently attended CASA’s Light of Hope breakfast and from the moment that I walked into the Antler’s hotel in Colorado Springs until the event ended, I was so moved in both my heart and soul about why this county needs CASA – and YOU!

Time to think about summer camp!

Registration for overnight and summer camps have opened or will open soon! If you have a youth who would like to attend camp, please apply for MFCF funding and receive approval before registering for camps. CASA partners with YMCA Camps Shady Brook and Jackson, as well as Eagle Lake Camp to cover the full overnight camp cost. Please contact jillc@casappr.org with any questions.

Teen graduation party is May 1

If you have a teen on your case who is graduating or receiving a GED between Sept. 1, 2021 and Aug. 31, 2022, we would love to honor them at our Graduation Party on May 1 from 4:30-6:30 at the Broadmoor Community Church.  Please RSVP to jillc@casappr.org before Friday, April 22. Grads and GED Recipients - please fill out this brief questionnaire so we can make your party personal!

30 Stories in 30 Days for Child Abuse Prevention Month

One way we are observing Child Abuse Prevention Month is by running a new feature story each day this month about a person making a difference for local kids. We are sharing these stories on social media. The hope is that people are inspired by our amazing CASA volunteers so that they will want to become volunteers themselves!

Skate City passes available now!

Skate City passes are available at the front desk at the CASA office. Each certificate is good for a 2-hour session and skate rentals, as well as up to $7 in snacks! One pass will be needed for each youth. A huge thanks to Skate City Owner Jeff Ingrum for his generosity!

CO license plates to support CASA

Colorado CASA and the network of 18 local programs throughout the state are collecting signatures in favor of a group special license plate to promote awareness and to aid in recruitment and retention of CASA volunteers in Colorado.
