June 2021: News, Updates, and Opportunities for CASA Volunteers

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear CASA Volunteers,

Happy summer! June is one of my favorite months. I hope you all are finding some time to relax and enjoy all the beauty that Colorado has to offer with family and loved ones.

In addition to being the gateway to summer, June is also National Reunification Month and Pride Month. It's a time to reflect on family strengths that lead to successful reunifications, and a time to thank the CASA volunteers who work hard to help families see this success. Pride Month is a time to acknowledge the challenges faced and achievements celebrated by the LGBTQ youth that so many of you work with in your roles as CASA volunteers.

We are so incredibly grateful for the wonderful work our volunteers do in this community.  You are on the front line, delivering on our mission, with passion, commitment, and determination each and every day. You have continued this important work through a global pandemic, and that deserves a celebration. Obviously 2021 still looks very different than what we were used to prior to the pandemic, so we are continuing to hold off on one large in-person volunteer appreciation event. Instead, we are planning three smaller in-person gatherings for you to choose from. You'll see more details on these gatherings in the newsletter below and we hope to see you at one of them soon!

As always, please contact me at angelar@casappr.org with any questions or concerns.

With gratitude,

Angela

Get shorts for your CASA kids!

Do the kids on your case need shorts for summer? We still have TONS of brand-new shorts in almost all sizes. Please stop in and pick up some shorts for this great hot weather Monday through Friday, 8am until noon or 1pm until 5. Other summer clothes, activity items, books, and more will be in the Kid’s Closet. We currently do not have shorts for: 9 mos, 18 mos, 5, and 5T. If you are in need of shorts in these sizes, please contact jillc@casappr.org

Don't Miss the Teen Back to School Event at The Hanger this July!

CASA will hold a modified Back-to-School event for foster youth ages 12 to 18 at The Hanger on July 15 from 12-4, July 17 from noon-3, July 19 from from 5-7. On the 15th, there will be free haircuts! Space will be limited so sign up in advance with jillc@casappr.org. Students will be able to pick out a backpack, school supplies, treats, and new shoes; and shop at The Hanger. Attending any of these dates will count as your shopping trip at The Hanger for that week. We have a ton of brand new bras so it would be helpful if teens know their bra size.

Recording available from last month's CASA/GAL Volunteer's Day

On May 18, National CASA/GAL partnered with FosterStrong to host CASA/GAL Volunteer’s Day to honor and thank CASA/GAL volunteers who work hard to ensure children and youth in the foster care system have their voices heard every day. The event even featured surprise celebrity messages from U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Simone Biles, Tiny Chef, The Try Guys, and Instant Family director Sean Anders. If you missed it, watch the recording!

June 2021 Anniversaries

We are thrilled to celebrate so many volunteer anniversaries in June. Thank you to everyone who stands by our CASA kiddos!

Inclusion Corner: Pride Month!

According to www.youth.gov, studies have found LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in the child welfare system, even though they are likely to be underreported because of the risk of abuse if their identity is disclosed. Many CASA volunteers work with LGBTQ youth. We hope you will join us in acknowledging the struggles of LGBTQ youth and celebrating their successes during Pride Month. If you're not familiar with Inside Out Youth Services, it's a local nonprofit that exists to build access and equity for LGBTQ youth. Check them out here.
