July 2021: News, Updates, and Opportunities for CASA Volunteers

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear CASA Volunteers,

Happy July! It is proving to be a great month at CASA. In addition to welcoming our full staff back to the office, the courthouse reopened to the public and resumed close-to-normal operations on July 6. I know many of you will be pleased to return to in-person hearings as you advocate for the children on your cases!

In addition to programs transitioning back to normal, we are also busy preparing for the first two in-person fundraising events we have planned in quite a while: Light of Hope Teller and Light of Hope North. More information about these events will be available soon. If your comfort level allows, we invite you to attend one of them.

Volunteer information sessions are now taking place twice a month with both virtual and in-person formats, and we are very excited to announce our first-ever "Dudes and Brews" event in Teller County. See the link to this event in the calendar below, and be sure to invite any men you know who would make great CASA volunteers above the clouds!

As always, please contact me at angelar@casappr.org with any questions or concerns. Thank you for everything you do for the children of the Pikes Peak Region!

With gratitude,

Angela

Yoga for CASA staff and volunteers

CASA endeavors to promote self care for all of our volunteers and staff.  Yoga is one outlet some may find brings wonderful benefits to both body and mind. If there is interest, she would like to offer a donation-based, beginner/ intermediate class for CASA staff and volunteers on Sunday mornings from 8:30-9:45am at the CASA building. Please contact Jillian if are interested at jillianw@casappr.org or 719.447.9898 ext 1053.

Don't Miss the Teen Back to School Event at The Hanger this July!

CASA will hold a modified Back-to-School event for foster youth ages 12 to 18 at The Hanger on July 15 from 12-4, July 17 from noon-3, July 19 from from 5-7. Students will be able to pick out a backpack, school supplies, treats, and new shoes; and shop at The Hanger. Attending any of these dates will count as your shopping trip at The Hanger for that week. We have lots of new bras so it would be helpful if teens know their bra size.

Have younger youth? Check out the Backpack Bash 2021!

Pikes Peak United Way and COSILOVEYOU are back again with their Backpack Bash, which provided backpacks filled with school supplies to nearly 8,000 students in El Paso County. There are multiple locations across El Paso County on Saturday, July 31 and Saturday, August 7th. For more information, click here.

21 new Advocates and SEPT Facilitators sworn in during the month of June

Twenty one new community volunteers were sworn in as officers of the court in the month of June! Fourteen of these volunteers are now Court Appointed Special Advocates and seven of these volunteers are now Facilitators in CASA’s Supervised Exchange & Parenting Time Program!

Happy anniversary July volunteers!

We have lots of anniversaries to celebrate in July! Thank you to everyone who stands by our CASA kiddos year after year! Included in these anniversaries are Mike McAdams (pictured) who is celebrating 16 years as an advcoate and Georgeann Hughes who is celebrating 15 years as an advocate!

Inclusion Corner: July is the 31st anniversary of the ADA

Did you know an estimated 20% of Americans live with a disability? The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed by President George Bush in 1990 and CASA is pleased to observe the 31st anniversary of this civil rights law on July 26th. The Rocky Mountain ADA Center, funded by the Dept. of Health and Human Services, is a great resource for information about rights and responsibilities under the law for children on your cases with physical, invisible, or cognitive disabilities.
